比較（比較級・最上級・as 〜 as）
この単元でできるようになること
- （-er / more）＋ than で「A は B より〜」が言える
- （the -est / the most）＋ in / of で「〜の中で一番」が言える
- as 〜 as で「A は B と同じくらい〜」が言える
- er / est をつける語と more / most を使う語を区別できる
- good-better-best など不規則変化を覚える
- 「〜のほうが好き」「どちらが〜？」の表現が使える
入試での位置づけ
比較は空所補充・並べかえ・書きかえ（比較級 ⇔ 最上級 ⇔ as 〜 as）の定番で、出題範囲の広い単元です。グラフや表を読む問題（「A は B より多い」）でも比較表現が鍵になります。like A better than B、Which do you like better, A or B? は会話文で頻出。
1. 比較級 ──「A は B より〜」
まずここだけ
形容詞・副詞 ＋ er ＋ than で「〜より…」。
Tom is taller than Ken.（トムはケンより背が高い） This book is more interesting than that one. I get up earlier than my brother.
er のつけ方

| 長い語（2 音節以上の多く・3 音節以上） | more ＋ 原級 | more beautiful、more important、more difficult、more popular、more interesting |
「長い語」の目安：-ful、-ous、-ing、-ive、-ant などで終わる語、3 音節以上の語は more。 famous → more famous、useful → more useful、slowly → more slowly。
「比べる相手」は than のあと
He is older than I (am). ／ He is older than me. 会話では than me も使われますが、学校文法では than I が基本。どちらも正解として扱われることが多い。
2. 最上級 ──「〜の中で一番」
まずここだけ
the ＋ 形容詞・副詞 ＋ est ＋ in / of で「〜の中で一番…」。
Tom is the tallest in his class.（クラスで一番背が高い） This is the most interesting book of the three. Mt. Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan.
in と of の使い分け

覚え方：「〜の中」という範囲が in、「〜たちの中」という仲間の数が of。
est のつけ方
er と同じルール。 tall → tallest、large → largest、easy → easiest、big → biggest、beautiful → the most beautiful
副詞の最上級は the を省略できる（発展）
He runs (the) fastest in his class.
3. 不規則変化 ── 絶対に覚える
まずここだけ

4. as 〜 as ──「A は B と同じくらい〜」
まずここだけ
as ＋ 原級（元の形）＋ as で「〜と同じくらい…」。er や est はつけない。
Tom is as tall as Ken.（トムはケンと同じくらい背が高い） This book is as interesting as that one. I can run as fast as you.
否定 not as 〜 as ──「〜ほど…ではない」
Ken is not as tall as Tom.（ケンはトムほど背が高くない） = Ken is shorter than Tom. = Tom is taller than Ken.
not as 〜 as は「〜ほど…ではない」と訳す。「同じくらいではない」ではないので注意。書きかえ問題の定番。
よくある間違い
- as taller as → as tall as（原級）
- not as tall as を「同じ高さではない」と訳す → 「〜ほど高くない」
5. 疑問文と「〜のほうが好き」
ここまでできれば十分
Which is 〜er, A or B?（A と B ではどちらが〜？）
Which is larger, Tokyo or Osaka? — Tokyo is.
Who is 〜er, A or B?（人）
Who is taller, Tom or Ken? — Tom is.
Which / What is the 〜est 〜?
What is the highest mountain in Japan? — Mt. Fuji is. Who is the tallest in your class?
like A better than B（B より A が好き）／ like A (the) best（A が一番好き）
I like dogs better than cats. Which do you like better, dogs or cats? — I like dogs better. What sport do you like the best? — I like soccer the best.
6. 書きかえの型
ここまでできれば十分
同じ内容を 3 通りで言える。
Tom is taller than Ken.（トム ＞ ケン） = Ken is shorter than Tom. = Ken is not as tall as Tom.
No other mountain in Japan is as high as Mt. Fuji. = Mt. Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan. = Mt. Fuji is higher than any other mountain in Japan.（他のどの山より高い）← 発展
比較級を強める（発展）
- much 〜er：ずっと〜 He is much taller than I.（× very taller）
- a little 〜er：少し〜
- 〜er and 〜er：ますます〜 It is getting colder and colder.
- the 〜er, the 〜er：〜すればするほど… The more you practice, the better you become.
7. 自己チェック
- er / est をつける語か、more / most を使う語か
- 比較級には than、最上級には the ＋ in / of
- in（場所・集団）と of（複数・数）の使い分け
- good-better-best、many/much-more-most
- as 〜 as の間は原級。not as 〜 as は「〜ほど…でない」
- Which do you like better, A or B? に better で答える
